When I go back to my parents' house for Obon or the New Year holidays, the whole family gathers at once and the house turns lively in an instant. I live alone, so my honest feeling is that it is less lively than simply loud. Someone is always talking somewhere, and even while I am working or reading, I am spoken to about things that do not matter, and that alone leaves me tired. Coming back from my parents' house to my own home in Tokyo, I feel relieved to have time and space that are mine alone. At the same time, part of me thinks those noisy family hours were enjoyable after all, so say what you will, family is a good thing.
