When I go away on a business trip or a holiday, I make a point of finishing the cleaning and the laundry and changing my sheets before I leave. With the packing too it is a lot of work, but something my mother once said has stayed with me. There is always a small chance that someone may have to go into your room — if you had an accident while travelling, or if the neighbours had a fire while the house was empty — and if the room were full of rubbish then, you would be embarrassed. Fair enough, I thought. Besides, a clean room is far more comfortable to come home to when you are tired from a trip. I leave on a business trip tomorrow morning, so I will be getting up earlier than usual to clean and do the laundry.
