A phrase from the radio — climb and climb, and you are still at the foot of the mountain — struck me deeply at fifty-five. Rather than discouraging me, it reminds me that learning lasts a lifetime and growth never has to stop.

日本語 — Japanese (excerpt)

今朝 通勤時間に ラジオを 聞いていたら、「たどり来て、未だ山麓（さんろく）」という 言葉を 初めて 知りました。 どれだけ 高い 所まで たどり着いたと 思っても、それは まだ 山の ふもとに すぎない、という 意味だそうです。 この 言葉を 聞いて、私は 本当に その通りだな、と 思いました。

けさ つうきんじかんに らじおを きいていたら、「たどりきて、いまださんろく」という ことばを はじめて しりました。 どれだけ たかい ところまで たどりついたと おもっても、それは まだ やまの ふもとに すぎない、という いみだそうです。 この ことばを きいて、わたしは ほんとうに そのとおりだな、と おもいました。 じぶんなりに いっしょうけんめい やってきて、できる ことが ふえたと おもっても、すこし まえに すすむと また あたらしい かだいが みえてきます。
