On a nearly empty last train, I spotted two boxes of donuts — twenty-four in all — forgotten on the luggage rack. Imagining the owner's regret, I reaffirmed my own rule: never put anything up there.

この間、最終電車で帰っていたときのことです。電車はガラガラで、座席に座ってぼーっとしていたんですが、ふと目の前を見たら、棚の上にドーナツの箱が置いてありました。12個入りのドーナツの箱が2つ重なっていて、でも、周りを見渡しても持ち主らしき人は見当たりません。

このあいだ、さいしゅうでんしゃでかえっていたときのことです。でんしゃはがらがらで、ざせきにすわってぼーっとしていたんですが、ふとめのまえをみたら、たなのうえにどーなつのはこがおいてありました。じゅうにこいりのどーなつのはこがふたつかさなっていて、でもまわりをみわたしても、もちぬしらしきひとはみあたりません。
