I had just come back from my morning walk when something unthinkable happened — a sudden blow to the back of my head, and there was a crow, beak wide open, cawing at me. I used to turn and take another route whenever I saw one, but somewhere around fifty I stopped caring. Crows are clever and remember human faces, and since I walk the same route every day, the thought of tomorrow is genuinely frightening.
