A 67-Year-Old Who Sails to Ogasawara

Since May I have gone to a different workplace once a week, a posting that lasts half a year. Yesterday we finished early and several of us went for tea — people of all ages and jobs whom I would never meet otherwise. The one who spoke up first was a deeply tanned man of sixty-seven. His hobby is sailing, and he is out on the water most weeks; sometimes he sails the thousand kilometers to the Ogasawara Islands, the farthest islands that still belong to Tokyo. I have always wanted to go there, but it is too far — and he simply sails there himself. Hearing him widened my world, and it was a rich hour.
