Around the time I passed fifty, I began to feel my eyelids growing heavy. When I looked closely at my eyes in the mirror, the lids had come down and only about two thirds of the dark of my eye was showing. It is an ageing change called ptosis, and I had heard that surgery is the answer, so I had been thinking it might soon be time for that, when I heard that a medicine had gone on sale. I went straight to the eye clinic and bought it. About fifteen minutes after I put the drops in, my field of vision brightened, and in the mirror my eyes had opened up wide. It felt as though the clearly drooping lids were being pulled up by the muscle deep inside the eye. I was delighted. Sadly the drops last only about six hours and the effect does not go on, so from here I want to think about how to live with this medicine, or whether surgery would be better after all.
